BANGALORE, India — Samsung has become the latest to join the bandwagon of global handset makers that have recently announced either manufacturing or assembly operations in India. The South Korean company plans to start a plant at Chandigarh in Haryana in northern India, according to a Press Trust of India Report Wednesday (Nov. 30), initially investing $15 million. The plans were reportedly disclosed to the chief Minister of Haryana during his ongoing visit to Seoul by Ki Tae Lee, president, Samsung Telecommunications. The investment is the first of big investments by Samsung for handset manufacturing in India, the report said. Earlier, Nokia announced plans to make handsets in Chennai in southern India, while South Korea’s LG is setting up a plant in Pune in western India. Motorola also said it would handsets assembled in India, while an unnamed Taiwanese company will invest as much as a billion dollars to make handsets there. (() |
