Freescale Semiconductor''s (NYSE:FSL) (NYSE:FSL.B)Enhanced Data rate for GSM Evolution (EDGE) RF subsystem has beenselected for the TTPCom cellular baseband engine (CBEmacro) 2G modemdesign. The combination of Freescale''s proven RF experience withTTPCom''s expertise in designing communications subsystems will reducetime to market for terminal and silicon manufacturers. This CBEmacro platform will be one of the world''s first solutionsto provide the benefits of DigRF, an open standard designed to allowcompliant ICs to always communicate with each other. The Freescaleradio will be pre-integrated into the platform designed tosignificantly improve the time to market of devices built aroundCBEmacro through reduced development and test time and cost. "Our evaluation revealed that Freescale offers an excellentcombination of RF experience, performance, cost and DigRF standardcompatibility," said Julian Hildersley, managing director of TTPCom''ssilicon business unit. "Supporting Freescale''s EDGE RF enables us toprovide our customers complete solutions, leading to an open market indigital terminal components." Freescale''s EDGE RF subsystem was introduced in February 2005. Itconsists of the MMM6000 transceiver, which integrates the analogbaseband and contains a DigRF interface and MMM6027 power amplifierthat includes the antenna switch and most passive components. "We anticipate handset manufacturers will replace entire GSM/GPRSline-ups with EDGE-capable technology," said Kent Heath, director ofcellular operations, Radio Products Division for Freescale. "Thisreference design will allow manufacturers to do that quickly andefficiently. We are excited to be working with TTPCom. Combining ourindustry strengths will greatly benefit customers worldwide." Freescale''s RF subsystem met the high expectations for TTPCom''sGSM/GPRS/EDGE reference design by offering: -- High integration of components resulting in reduced bill of materials. -- Compliance with industry-standard DigRF interface for ease of design. -- Auto-calibration feature that helps to improve handset yields in manufacturing. -- Low current consumption for longer battery life. -- Proven, reliable quality for clear reception, low noise and fewer dropped calls. EDGE is an enhancement of previous networks to triple the dataspeeds for multimedia and Internet access. Higher data rates are idealfor feature phones, smart phones, PDAs, PC cards and wireless modules. To date, 147 network operators in 81 countries are committed todeploying GSM/EDGE for the delivery of next generation services.(a) To learn more about Freescale''s EDGE transceiver and poweramplifiers, visit www.freescale.com/cellularRF. About Freescale Semiconductor Freescale Semiconductor, Inc. (NYSE:FSL) (NYSE:FSL.B) is a globalleader in the design and manufacture of embedded semiconductors forthe automotive, consumer, industrial, networking and wireless markets.Freescale became a publicly traded company in July 2004 after morethan 50 years as part of Motorola, Inc. The company is based inAustin, Texas, and has design, research and development, manufacturingor sales operations in more than 30 countries. Freescale, a member ofthe S&P 500(R), is one of the world''s largest semiconductor companieswith 2004 sales of $5.7 billion (USD). www.freescale.com About DigRF The DigRF digital interface standard defines an efficient physicalinterconnection between baseband and RF integrated circuits fordigital cellular terminals. It ensures that ICs complying with thestandard can, when correctly configured, always communicate with eachother, leading to an open market in digital terminal components. Thestandard places as few constraints on the internal architectures ofthe ICs themselves as possible to allow suppliers space forcompetition based on innovation and efficient design. The standard currently addresses 2.5G GSM (E-GPRS to slot class12); work is in progress on a new version of the standard covering 3G.It has been defined and published by the Digital Interface WorkingGroup.
