LONDON — With a total of 11 investments Intel Capital was the most active of 397 venture capital companies, other companies and individuals, recorded on the EE Times Venture Capital Counter (VCC) in 2004. In 2004 the VCC, which covers investments in semiconductors, fab equipment, packaging, foundry, materials, MEMS and EDA software, registered 173 startup deals that raised $2,128,900,000. Intel Capital is the venture capital arm of Intel Corp. (Santa Clara, Calif.), the world’s largest chip maker, and operates numerous venture capital funds aimed at technology areas of strategic interest to Intel. Close behind Intel Capital, with 10 deals done, came London-based 3i Group plc. 3i’s investments include those made by its U.S. offices as well as the London office. 3i is a large investor that covers all stages of funding from early-stage venture capital to growth capital and buyouts, and the company is active across three continents.
