China’s Cidana Inc., a provider of multimedia software for handheld, embedded and automotive markets, has partnered with Israel-based chip supplier Siano Mobile Silicon Ltd to develop mobile DTV systems capable of receiving DVB-T on mobile handheld platforms such as PDAs and smart phones. The two companies are planning a demonstration at this week’s International Broadcasting Convention in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The companies plan to show Cidana’s DVB-T player software running on Siano’s SMS1010 mobile TV receiver. According to the companies’ statement, DVB-T is commercially deployed in more than 32 countries in Europe and Asia, with another 30 to 40 countries planning deployment soon. "Due to power consumption, mobility and antenna size restrictions, DVB-T has not been perceived as adequate for mobile devices until recently," the statement said. Siano claimed that its SMS1010 receiver chip has reception performance that allows mobility and is able to work well with a small antenna. "Both DVB-T and DAB are available free-to-air in quite a few countries," said Alon Ironi, CEO of Siano Mobile Silicon. "There is no need for frequency allocation, conditional access or operator subscription. End users simply need to get hold of a DVB-T-enabled mobile device, and they are all set for watching DTV and radio on-the-go—for free."
