SAN FRANCISCO — Cypress Semiconductor Corp. Wednesday (Sept. 14) said it will establish a regional chip design center in Shanghai, China, to provide IC design and sales support to customers in the Asia. The company plans to hire as many as 50 employees at the facility within the next two years. "Shanghai offers a unique blend of talent, location and critical mass, making it an ideal site for design activity," said Paul Keswick, Cypress vice president of new product development, in a statement. "In addition to several outstanding universities in the area, most of China''s major fabs, design houses and technology centers are located in or around Shanghai." Cypress operations in Asia include design centers in India, a Cypress assembly and test facility in the Philippines, and an operations center in Hong Kong. The Shanghai center, which will design a variety of products for local markets, will be located in Shanghai''s Grand Gateway towers, according to Cypress (San Jose, Calif.). Also Wednesday, Cypress named Govardhan Ramachandra as India managing director and country manager. Ramachandra replaces Shiva Prasad Gowni, who is leaving Cypress to pursue another opportunity, the company said. Ramachandra has 22 years of experience in the semiconductor industry, including 11 years at Cypress. He also has held senior positions at AMD and other multinational corporations.
